As we gather together to worship the Lord, our hearts are saddened by the shooting that happened in Colorado, and I think we must ask ourselves what does The Dark Knight Rises shooting tell us about America? What does this tell us about our country? Where have we gone wrong that a young person can walk into a theater, a bright person, someone that is in a PhD program, can walk into a theater with a bulletproof vest, helmet, gas mask, four weapons, and thousands of rounds of ammunition and kill 12 people and wound dozens of others? Certainly God has some answers for us. We’re going to look to see what the word of God has to say concerting this subject.

We need to turn back to God, and you may ask: how do we need to turn back to God? It’s not us that need to turn back to God, it’s all those wicked people out there, but let me tell you something: when the most conservative branch of Christianity only has 9% of its members that have a Biblical worldview, we have a problem in this nation. When the majority of Christians are more likely to be influenced by TV, the news, and movies than they are from the word of God, we have a problem in this nation. When we have pastors that stand up and condone fornication, and adultery, and homosexuality, and perform homosexual marriage ceremonies, and even ordain ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ who are homosexual, something that God says is an abomination, we have a problem in this nation. When we shed the blood of over 55,000,000 preborn children for our convenience, for our figures, for our careers, we have a problem in this nation.

You may recall the video on the Internet of the little girl in China who wondered away from her mom and wondered into the road where she was ran over by a van. Since China is a police state with cameras everywhere, the event was caught on video. You can see the passenger of the van look out and see the girl before the van drives away. Multiple people passed by, saw the girl dying in the middle of the street, and just walked on by.
I want to take you to another scene, one in America where shoppers walked over a dying man to preserve their place in the black Friday line. What kind of country have we become when life is so invaluable and when our focus is so much on material possessions and not on glorifying God, and when in this time economic uncertainty, in this time of need, in this time when we have a record number of foreclosures and people can’t pay their bills, we see more money spent on black Friday than any other Christmas ever? What kind of people have we become?

One would think that the Lord would take sides in this battle, especially since Israel was His chosen people. Yes the answer was, No, but I am here. Joshua’s question really was misdirected. Every election cycle, I receive a barrage of phone calls and emails from voters wanting to know where the candidates stand on the issues. I enjoy these calls because it shows me these citizens care enough to make informed decisions over who they vote for. I think we all agree that we need more informed voters and fewer voters voting based on party, skin color, ethnicity, etc. (I’m sure you remember the exit poll video where Obama voters showed their lack of knowledge of the current political leaders and the video where Obama voters said they voted for him because of his prolife stance and that they liked his choice of Sarah Palin as Vice President.)

We should honor them every day, yet all too often, mothers don’t receive the respect they deserve. motherhood is in a crisis in America because we have departed from the Biblical Standard for the Family, Fatherhood, and Motherhood. It is time that we return to the clear teaching of Christ found in the word of God, the Bible. These teachings deal with sex before marriage, faithfulness in marriage, whether we view children as a blessing or an inconvenience, the role of women in the work place, and the important but often neglected role of having the older women train the younger women. I challenge you to look to the scripture with me as we seek to understand God’s heart on mothers and motherhood.

Sermon, 02/06/2011, Why This Pittsburgh Steelers Fan Won’t Wear His Roethlisberger Jersey
Today is the day that football fans live for. This is the day they dream about all year, hoping their team will make it to the Super Bowl. Only two will. Only one will win. It seams that some teams never make it while others make it regularly, only to lose. A few, make it regularly and win.
I am a football fan. More specifically, I am a Pittsburgh Steelers fan and have been since they beat the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl X. I was a fan during the days of the steel curtain in the 1970 when the Pittsburgh defense dominated and Terry Bradshaw, Linn Swan, John Stallworth, and Franco Harris provided the offense. I was a fan in the 1980s when the Steelers couldn’t win. I was a fan in the 90s, when Pittsburgh got to one super bowl and lost. And I have been a fan during the last decade when the Steelers have played poorly at times but have also played well, making it to several championship games, only to be beaten by the New England Patriots and then winning two and now appearing in their third super bowl in the last decade.
I will be rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers tonight. I will be waiving my terrible towel. But I won’t be wearing my Ben Rothlisberger jersey. I haven’t worn it all year. Big Ben’s off season behavior, including wild drunken parties and allegations of rape, have kept my jersey in the closet this year.
